When your computer is new, you enjoy using it because it’s fast and you can open your files in seconds. In the process of time, the computer may begin to be slow, taking longer to open.  There arrives a need for you to speed up your computer.

A slow computer is boring and can make you feel drained of your energy. Many factors contribute to your computer’s slow speed. One of the first and most important tips to speed up your computer is to understand how to speed up Internet because fast internet improves productivity level.

Speed up your Internet

Slow Internet can slow your work leading to delays in delivery time. The major cause of slow Internet speed is bandwidth. If you are using a 2Mbps bandwidth, your Internet speed will be slow compared to someone using 7Mbps.

If you notice your Internet buffers anytime you want to open something in your browser, know your Internet is slow. The best remedy is to upgrade your bandwidth or switch to a new Internet provider.

Clean up your desktop

A lot of people tend to store files on their desktop. Over time, the desktop becomes clogged with documents, folders and apps. When your desktop is clogged, it makes it hard for you to find your documents and it also slows down your computer.

To help increase your computer speed, clean it up. You can create several folders and drop your documents according to type, date, importance and so on. Once you have transferred them into folders, move all the folders into the hard drive or store them online.

Uninstall unused programs

From the time you buy your new computer, you begin adding programs according to need. Over time, your computer may have too many programs, with some that are rarely used.

Some programs are as heavy as 400Mbs and they take up a lot of space in your hard drive. When you have limited storage, your computer becomes slow. To help increase speed, go to the control panel and uninstall all programs that you rarely use.

Upgrade your RAM

Your computer’s RAM temporarily stores your files and programs so that you can access them easily. When you open your computer, files and programs that open in the background occupy space in the RAM.

You can request your computer specialist to upgrade your RAM or do it yourself if you know how it’s done. You will immediately notice an increase in speed on your computer.

Scan for viruses

Computer viruses are programs that replicate themselves once executed by inserting their own codes. The viruses continue replicating until they take up much of the space in your computer. Your computer decreases speed and sometimes it will hardly start or open any file.

Always ensure you have installed a genuine and strong antivirus in your computer. The latest versions of Windows come with inbuilt antivirus and it’s usually very strong.

Do not open too many documents and programs

When working on your computer, you may want to refer to several documents. The easiest way you would do is open all the documents you need for reference so that you can keep on switching between them.

You may also want to get information online from several resources and you also open too many windows. Your computer will be slow because you will overwork the RAM. The solution is to open one document at a time or a few windows at a time.

Defrag your hard disk

When you have many files stored in your hard disk, sometimes they can break into small pieces and fill your hard drive. Anytime you need to access a specific file, the computer system takes time to identify all the fragments that make the file you want to access.

These actions slow your computer. To defragment means to consolidate all the fragments into one place so that the computer can access them from one place and thereby increase speed.

Upgrade your hard drive

Older computers use the HDD drive, which has moving parts. The moving parts are what causes document fragmentation, which slows your computer. If you’re using the old HDD, you may want to upgrade to the latest SSD. SSD does not have moving parts, meaning it’s stable and will not fragment. Once you upgrade to SSD, your computer will increase speed and documents will open faster.

Upgrade Windows

The older versions of Windows tend to be slower than the newer versions. A lot of features have been added to the newer versions and the developer had speed in mind. The newer computer versions come with the latest Windows but if you are using an older computer, you probably have Windows 7 or 8. You will notice a difference in speed if you upgrade to Windows 10 and above.
